Democrats are proposing to adopt an interstate agreement to elect the president by National Popular Vote (NPV). Under this agreement New Hampshire’s electoral votes for President would be given to the national winner of the popular vote, even if NH voted overwhelmingly for the other candidate. Our votes would be ignored and would be replaced by votes from the most heavily populated states.
By sponsoring HB 148, the Democrats would destroy New Hampshire’s First in the Nation participation in the presidential primary. Republicans recognize the value New Hampshire provides to the country with our unique geography and population that can truly vet every presidential candidate for the nation. Candidates for president visit the small towns across the state, meet with voters individually in town hall forums, and are asked the tough questions with lengthy responses.
If the Democrats pass National Popular Vote, voters would choose presidential candidates based on 30-second sound bites, geared toward mass appeal with little substance. New Hampshire will never see a presidential candidate again. We, with 20 other smaller states, will be dwarfed by the ten largest states and have zero impact on who our next president is.
HB 148 will have a public hearing tomorrow, January 15. Please contact members of the Election Law committee to oppose HB 148, adopting the National Popular Vote.
