We could not let this clichéd piece of nonsense go without response.
Originally published as an Op-Ed in the January 12, 2011 edition of the Union Leader, it was titled “Republicans are about to destroy New Hampshire” Later it was reposted at londonderrynh.net and titled “Out of Control Majority in Concord”. Its author is none other than Kathy Sullivan, a Manchester Attorney and a member of the Democratic National Committee. She was chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party from 1999-2007 and helped promulgate such phony press releases as the accusation that the NHTPC was a ‘white supremacist’ group who celebrated ‘white pride’ day and other nonsense and published at the now totally discredited Blue Hampshire website.
If any majority was out of control, it was the past legislature, as our friend Steve MacDonald so aptly writes here.
Let’s unravel some of the tripe if we may? Sullivan says:
The 2011 session of the New Hampshire legislature is underway. Under the hapless leadership of Speaker William O’Brien, the New Hampshire House is acting so recklessly that natural allies like Charlie Arlinghaus of the conservative Josiah Bartlett Center, the editors of the Union Leader, and former Speaker Donna Sytek are questioning the Speaker’s decisions. The House leadership is receiving negative reviews not seen in Concord since Craig Benson was governor.
Let’s step back for a moment. Some proof please? O’Brien is well-respected by all. “Hapless” is not a word that comes to mind when thinking of Speaker Bill.
Sullivan goes on to declare:
First, there was the adoption of a rule to permit guns to be carried in the State House, including the House floor. This is not an exercise of Second Amendment rights; it is gun mania run amok.
No, what this amounted to was the restoration of rights that had been long-held before the progressives took charge and felt the need to take them away for no good reason. If anyone is emotionally unstable it is Sullivan and her cohorts who are constantly making up stories about their opponents.
Then there is the unconstitutional effort to remove Representative Mike Brunelle because he works for the Democratic Party.
Not sure why this is unconstitutional, and your party would have done the same. And please if you are going to dis Al Baldasaro because you don’t like a bill he’s filed, PLEASE at least spell his name correctly!
The whining continues:
Lets not forget Rep. Jordan Ulery. He introduced a bill that would only permit multi-lingual signs in retail stores if the signs also are in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish. He believes that business will not want to go the expense of printing signs in multiple languages, so all signs in New Hampshire which are in a language other than English will be removed.
Well, something must be done to stop the government from mandating this sort of silliness. If a shop owner wants to post a sign in another language that should be HIS BUSINESS and his alone.
The final salvo is beyond belief:
New Hampshire deserves thoughtful, sensible legislators who will make our great state even greater. Instead, we have Speaker O’Brien and his out of control majority. They are about to destroy the New Hampshire we love.
Whoa Kathy, the “NH we love”? Yes that was the NH we almost HAD before your ilk came along and started up with filing a litany of bills that dealt with fringe social issues. It is your side who nearly destroyed NH because meanwhile, NH fell into debt, quite possibly $900M.
New Hampshire deserves thoughtful, sensible legislators who will make our great state even greater and we got them. It is not out of control to repeal the nonsense your side perpetrated; bills that took our rights away, or bills that imposed new taxes.
We only hope we can remedy the deficit that YOUR Governor says did not exist.
